Red Meat
Red meat can be a valuable part of a balanced dog’s diet because it provides high-quality, complete protein to support healthy muscles, tissue repair and everyday energy. Meats such as beef, buffalo, venison, pork, rabbit, lamb and goat also naturally contain important nutrients including iron, zinc, selenium and B vitamins, particularly vitamin B12, which help support red blood cell production, immune function and a healthy metabolism. Different red meats can offer useful variety: for example, venison and buffalo are often leaner options, while lamb and pork may provide more fat and energy for dogs that need it. However, every dog’s nutritional needs are different, so red meat should be included as part of a complete and balanced diet rather than fed on its own. Choose plain, properly cooked meat with no added salt, seasoning, onions, garlic or sauces, and avoid cooked bones, which can splinter and cause injury. When introducing a new protein, start with small amounts and watch for signs of digestive upset or sensitivity. For puppies, senior dogs, dogs with health conditions or those eating a home-prepared diet, advice from a vet or qualified canine nutritionist can help ensure the diet meets their needs.
